Why is it yesterday I weighed 181 and I was thrilled with my progress. Then I worked like a son-of-a-gun sweeping and vacuuming a very large dirty back porch and washed down all the furniture and equipment which took half a day and I was sweating terribly from all the exercise and the humidity. This morning, first thing, I weighed myself and I weighed 182.5. How in the world did I gain 1.5 pounds OVERNIGHT????? Needless to say I'm frustrated.

check your scale. sounds like it was off. also clothes from light shorts to jeans? I am just trying to help

it's just water retention, please don't panic, it does not help.

takes the wind from beneath the sails for sure, I have the same issue, go without food for days, now with a push mower, weed eat, and gain 3 lbs. good luck, the wife says I weigh too often, and expect too much. I am hungry.

That happens to me all the time - it is very frustrating and defies logic but it happens. In a couple of days, it sorts itself out again. I sometimes weight more AFTER I use the toilet than before - weird but that's the way it works sometime :)

OMG I hate that so much. I work like a dog doing whatever and I'm HEAVIER the next day. I don't believe the "water weight" thing. If I'm sweating, all the water's coming out!

it happens to everyone all the time, if you did not eat over your goal it is mostly likely retained water. You worked very hard and your muscles needed the extra water. It will drop very quickly

Do y'all want to really know? Water: The amount of water your body can hold is incredibly elastic. a full bladder first thing in the morning can be 16 oz (2 lb) or potentially more. It's a good measurement to keep in mind. A cup (8oz) of water weighs about 1 lb. As for sweat, I am going off of the values reported in this study ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2267797/ ) which indicate that 35 minutes of exertion at 40% VO2 max (for me, that would be a heartrate of about 120) would yield on average ~.5L of water loss through sweat per hour. That is about ~1.1lb of water, but the authors note that it can range from about 0.1L/hr to 1L/hr depending on the individual person (and that most of that variance occurs in winter. The summer values were more tightly grouped around the .47L/hr average). 35 minutes of 120bpm heartrate is just about in-between what I get mowing the lawn with a push mower (110bpm) vs. a reel mower (130bpm). Either way, I end up drinking easily a cup of water (if not more) afterwards, completely knocking out the .47L I would have sweated out (if not more). These are going to be variable for every body, but use this knowledge the next time you are working up a sweat and compare what you drink with how long you spent working at 40% VO2 max Scales: Everyone knows that the accuracy of scales can vary greatly from one scale to the next. What is less well-understood is that the *precision* of a measuring instrument (i.e. a scale) can also be different. Precision is how well the same measuring device will come to the same measurement against the same thing being measured. That is the physical best, and it will only get worse if the operator applies the measurement process in inconsistent ways. You can test your scale for precision by trying repeated measurements. If they vary from one moment to the next with no changes in what you are placing onto the scale, then you know that your scale is not precise. Even if they *don't* vary, if it is an electronic scale, many of them are programmed with memories so that if the difference in one measurement to the next is less than some predetermined threshold, the scale won't report the difference. Usually this difference is fairly small, in the .2lb range, but it depends on how the scale was designed. You can get around this by taking some small known weights (2lb dumbbells, a styrofoam cup of 8oz of water (not a glass! glass is heavy! styrofoam is negligible weight), an unopened 1lb bag of rice or grains or beans) and measure yourself holding and without holding the item. If the scale reports the expected change (+1 lb when holding 1 lb, +2 lbs when holding 2 lbs, and so on), then returns to the original measurement when you set the item down, then you can be satisfied that fluctuations in weight are pretty reasonably corresponding to actual changes in the weight you are placing on the scale, therefore your scale is precise.

Small correction— there are 16 oz. in a pound not 8. I got what you were saying, but some might take that as gospel.

yep. I agree it's water, which is influenced by what you ate rather than the calorie count. happens to me all the time

thanks Kenna. it's a good call out. 2 cups of water, not just one

As most have mentioned, potentially water weight. If you had carbohydrate (plants, or sugar added to other foods-- even artificial sweetener due to cephalic response) your body not only retains water, but you also shut off gluconeogenesis to extent (meaning you are not exhaling that fat in simple terms while you breathe at night). Additionally, increases in fiber and or carb intake also increases gut bacteria which in turn does contribute to weight as well. The downside is you are measuring at different times of the day which causes you huge fluctuations (you can lose/gain around 5 lbs via voiding and BM plus an additional 5 lbs via perspiration/hydration-- thus weight yourself less often and at the very least, the same time per day). Unless your scale is calibrated regularly, they can also be off 2-5 lbs easily-- so 15 lbs of variation in less than 24 hours is more likely than not. Cut the sugar/starch/sweetener/fiber and you'll stop putting on water weight (if that is even the case) while you sleep.

water happens as our muscles try to repair themselves after a workout

Scale didn't move, I was naked and I had weighed first thing in the morning right after using the bathroom. I figured I should weigh less....not 1.5 pounds more. By the way, I'm also using a brand new digital scale.

It depends on what you ate in the days before as well. lower calorie meat like turkey and chicken are digested quicker than steaks or ground beef. You may have noticed more of a drop in the days that followed.

I’m sure your weight will go back down hang in there
