Just a random thought: why is it that most people will say "cardio" OR "resistance training" (weight lifting).
I'm not talking about an either/or situation. I'm asking about it because when I'm lifting weights, I'm getting more of an interval training workout than I've ever had on an elliptical by spiking the heart rate, then briefly resting before doing it again. That seems to me like I'm stressing my heart, which would be a cardio workout.
I've always thought of treadmills and ellipticals as more endurance and weights as strength training, but both are cardio, no?

I think it goes back to the whole aerobic/anaerobic thing. Aerobic aligns w/cardio while anaerobic aligns w/resistance training. I think it's a misnomer though, right? I mean your cardiac fitness is affected positively by all exercise. I would think.

Yes, subconsciously everyone is trying to forget leotards and leg warmers by using the word cardio instead. My favorite leotards were the man leotards with extraordinarily deep V's to show off as much chest hair as possible. In the spirit of full disclosure, my leg warmers had stripes. I was just that cool. I wonder what would happen if I got a new pair to wear to Zumba? Could I start it up again?

If you mix them, Cardio & Strength, the heart beat stays at a higher level on a continuous basis, ie CrossFit. Most groups use the word, Conditioning vs. Cardio, as you never stop for approximately 10 to 12 minutes (multiple exercises, Burpees, KB Swings, Rowing) & into strength for about the same time, but you rest between Strength exercises.
I do this 6 days a week & the Program is under 45 minutes & Burn at least 600 Cals. Of course, the metabolism doesn’t slow down until about an hour later.

I wear a heart rate monitor at my Orange Theory Fitness and YES my heart rate definitely goes up when lifting heavy weight...followed by interval training in the rower and elliptical where the heart rate consistently goes higher.

Chrisw77, animal print, white spandex, and aqua. With that trifecta you may be so uncool that you've swung back around to cool again. Sort of like Napoleon Dynamite. I think the discussion above supports people finding something that they enjoy doing rather than finding the "right" thing to do. Doing a lot of something is probably going to make you efficient at it but it won't necessarily have a significant impact on your ability to do other stuff. Finding something that makes you WANT to move around a bit and lifting heavy stuff once in a while is a good recipe for feeling better as far as I can tell.

Oh man, pretty much everything to do with the late 70's to mid 80's was groan-worthy. Being a 60's sort, I turned my radio off in 1975 I think it was so I was spared the majority of the weirdness.

Though I am embarrassed to say, I did own a pair a hip-hugger bell-bottoms. It was my only slip, I swear! Oh wait, had some padded shoulder tops.... gah. I was infected! Shoot me before I remember anything else.
