I really like words to be spelled correctly- I like correct grammar. I have a shirt that says, "I'm silently correcting your grammar." I know that is a bit much maybe and I feel bad when I wear it because it seems rude so it has become a last resort- haven't done laundry- shirt. The whole reason for writing- well-2 reasons- the 1st being that I don't want to get off the couch and take my fat ass to work so I am PROCRASTINATING... The second reason is I hate how to spell the word binging. Don't you feel like it should be bingeing? The google home mini says BINGING. To me, that rhymes with SINGING. So I plan to put an E in binging and I don't care who says it's wrong. To me it is like spelling refrigerator and then saying fridge. Maybe not exactly the same but anyhow. Deep thoughts. Happy Friday! Hitting the gym after work to make July 19th my 19th day straight- as planned until I can't go at the end of the month. I don't think anyone cares, but I am trying to make this post more relevant to this website. P.s. I have a typo in my "roller rink, learning to skate again" post and it drives me crazy. Probably will find one in here after I hit enter. 🙄😜

Trying to codify the English language into a set of logical rules is an exercise in futility. I feel really bad for someone trying to learn it as a second language as it's filled with nonsense and contradictions, both in spoken and written form. To me the most important thing in either realm is the ability to clearly articulate the point that you're trying to communicate. I would much rather consume a salient point filled with spelling and grammar errors than a misleading or ambiguous statement executed with spelling and grammatical perfection.

My sons first language is English, but he’s also learned French and Japanese. He hates French. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But we agree, English is very inconsistent with rules.

I'm about to delete this app because of the misspellings. They drive me insane.

You know you can edit your own journal entries. We can't edit comments but the entries are editable. I do it all the time.

LZenn I wasn't able to edit the entries. I'll keep trying then. Thank you

In my work world of continual rapid charting— everything was somehow abbreviated. No prepositions— no real sentence structure, no real punctuation. I could easily use an English writing class. I used to have really good spelling skills, but that has taken a slide as well because of auto correct. I do have to look things up as often. Oh well.

@dp thank you 😊 I sometimes sound like a pretentious prick but there are so many wonderful words we don’t use often that I love. Prolix and ineffable are my faves! It kind of amazes me that people can write for a living, this is something so “not French”. I do that too, sort of, but not only. In my previous role, I had an impressive list of tasks.. writing wasn’t even mentioned even if it was an inherent part of the deal (communications).

I'm still unable to change the word PEICE into PIECE on the entries and that's making me nuts

Kenna, Russian>French>English in terms of complexity. In that order. I speak all the three (even if I haven’t used Russian for decades).

Keyten...I thought you were being silly but I had to know. I love your sense of humor. 🤣

You can only edit your journals on the internet version so when posting from the app you have to be right or deal with it. I used to write emails all in lower caps in the past - it was how I indicated to my team the difference between 'fyi' and 'Hey, PAY ATTENTION'. It was kinder than leaving the cap locks on.

Juraitwaluzka... You're conveying your message clearly! And I agree. 😄

I am so opposite. I either write or edit for a few hours per day. Proofreading other's stuff to ensure they have proper semi-colon use...oh and the dreaded missing commas! My pet peeve at work at least is unnecessary verbosity and extraneous words "will assist in determining"...should just be "help determine" or "in order to" should just be "to"!!! But @Bella..speaking of work emails...I like when the other writers have great use of grammar in documents but in emails the formality just kills me! Like relax. Get a little personal. Take a break.

I have a little sign on my desk that says the same thing as your shirt. I am with you 100% on the binging thing.

I keep thinking pinball - BING!

Chris... I believe it's binge...but then turns to binging. Ricochet rabbit...lmao 🤣🤣I probably would have gone the rest of my life never remembering that. 😂

Bang. Can we use bang in place of binge?

Velveete— that is wonderful that you have had that exposure to other languages.

I went to Catholic school in the fifties. My teachers, the Sister of St. Joseph, would be so happy with this outpouring of love for proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. The worst one i ever saw was on a wooden cross, alongside the highway. Across the top, it said, “DAD” then underneath, “in are hearts.” 😭
