I'm thinking about getting a good heart rate monitor, one with a chest strap and and alarm when your heart rate goes above a set %. As weird as it sounds, I think I might be working out too hard on my cardio days.

Right now I'm doing...
Mon./Wed./Fri. - 100 Push Up Challenge workout/bodyweight strength exercises
Tue./Thur. - jump rope/boxing/walking/jogging
Saturday - yard work/remodeling/housework
Sunday - rest (HOORAY!)

I have a cheap heart rate monitor watch that is fairly accurate, but you have to stop exercising to actually check it (reads pulse from wrist and two fingers of opposite hand). The thing is, I push myself hard when I do my ropework and jogging. When I check my rate it's closer to my maximum than I would like. So, have any of you used one of the chest strap monitors? And does anyone know if heart rate training is really effective/beneficial? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

According to my trainer at the gym I was working out too hard. If you're working for weight loss it should actually be at a lower rate than if you are working for building up your cardio endurance. The cardio equipment at my gym has them built in, but I don't know how accurate they are. They also have some at the front desk that we can borrow that are those strap ones, but I've only used them twice and I find them uncomfortable. Just decide if you are going to really find it convenient to use before you invest in one. Of course, having to stop to check your heart rate isn't really efficient either.

I'd like to find a happy medium between weight loss and actual endurance, but I'm not sure if it's an all-or-nothing sort of thing. My max heart rate I believe is in the mid to high 190s, and when I'm doing my cardio it usually stays around 170-180+ when I'm working hard. The thing is, when my heart rate is lower (around 130s to 150s), I don't feel like I'm really getting much of a workout.

Hey Zero, I use the Garmin 305, it's a watch actually, and it's the best peice of tech/geek equipment I've ever purchased. I hate working out without it. There's a strap just like you were saying. Price ranges from $150 - $300. Sometimes you might find a killer deal, like ebay, craigslist, etc. although I recommend REI because they have a killer lifetime return policy. I know the price is sort of high, but coming from a penny-pincher, I definitely find it a great value.
