I think a trainer is a good idea to keep you motivated, help you to learn routines and to help you to keep appointments etc so you don't miss days. Also once you get a hang of routines there are days you may be ok on your own.

I go to they gym on my lunch break every day for 30 minutes, I get on the treadmill or elliptical, and then on the weekend I go for an hour and I will do 30 min of treadmill and then 30 min of weights... Nobody showed me anything.. While Im on the treadmill I watch everyone on the machines and that how I learnt how to use them. Im quite sure you can ask anyone there and they would be glad to show you a few things :D.. I hope this was helpful.

If you can afford it, a personal trainer to help start you off might be a good idea. Some personal trainers are great and others not so much. They should help you set goals and then show you how to achieve them. You can also learn as you go. Starting off with the treadmill or elliptical can also be good. You have to build endurance and work your way up to more exercise. But a personal trainer can be great when you are just getting started.

I did one or two sessions with a personal trainer but decided to just do it alone. I go three times per week. When I first started I did 30+5 minutes on the elliptical, 15 minutes going through a set of weight machines (3 sets of 10 reps on each) and then about 10 min on basic calisthenics (stretching, push-ups, sit-ups). After about 6 months I switched from the elliptical to treadmill – slowly increasing my speed/incline (these days I do 7mph on a 3 incline).

My vote will always go to a weightlifting program. Cardio is nice, good for your heart, etc, but a weightlifting session boosts your metabolism not just for an hour or two after getting off a treadmill, but for a whole 24 hours after. Plus increased lean body mass correlates with fewer joint issues, dislocations, etc, and helps keep your bones incredibly strong. And of course there's the entire aesthetic aspect of it. Don't be afraid of weights, and you don't need to avoid heavier weights either for fear of bulking up (no one will unless they're enhanced). Also don't fall for the whole 'toning' thing. There's no such thing. Muscle is muscle and fat is fat. You can build and lose either, but you can't change the type.

High Intensity Interval Training is great stuff. Does not have to be strenuous either - you can treadmill walk and get intervals by changing your pace and incline. Follow up with some dumbbell weight work and it is a great start. Ask for help from the staff.

It depends on your goals. If overall fitness is the goal, then and interval training and resistance-based training regimen is required. If weight loss is what you really want then calorie reduction along with long, slow workouts are required. If you can summon the will power to get to the gym you don't need to put a personal trainer on the payroll. You just need someone for a short time to design a plan for you, and to make sure you are doing the workouts correctly. Revisit them and the plan every six weeks to 90 days.
