Is butter really back? - Harvard School of Public Health

Five hours of hours of sleep, followed by two hours of drowsing while listening to podcasts.

Morning plank. Ten minutes on the Air Walk Trainer first thing in the morning to burn off glycogen.

Cardio: 1 1/2 hours on the Air Walk Trainer, 5 minutes on the stepper. Steps: 925 (Striiv smart pedometer).

Relaxation: half hour nap.

The Cuisinart knives arrived today. Now that summer's over, I've decided to take the Pizzazz Plus rotating oven off the kitchen counter to free up counter space. The Plus is great with frozen chicken wings and nuggets, breaded jalapeño peppers, cheese nuggets, fish fillets, egg rolls, and more. It also makes quesadillas and grilled sandwiches and even bakes cookies and cinnamon rolls from refrigerated dough. I used it during the summer because it doesn't heat up the kitchen and can save as much as 60% in energy compared to a conventional oven. Also, it doesn't set the smoke detectors off the way the oven does. However, I'm trying to cut down on my use of nonstick cookware.

I'm going to cook the stuff I used to cook with Pizzaz Plus in the cast iron skillet now that the temperature's dropped. Also, I haven't been making as many pizzas because the canned tomatoes I have are loaded with sodium. Right now, I'm thinking along the lines of cutting the canned tomatoes with crock pots filled with beans.

It sounds like the cooler weather has you thinking of dishes like chili. The winter weather prompts me to make more stick to your ribs kinds of meals, stews, chili, hearty soups, shepeards pie and other long cooking meals. Such good stuff. I do use butter when cooking, but sparingly. Nothing tastes as good or is as satisfying. I will use coconut Oil to cook stir-fry meals. The medium-chain fatty acids in it are supposed to be better for us than those in saturated fat. You seem to be really consistent with the exercise regimen you are on. Good for you. That, your sharing what your know on your journal and tracking your intake is inspiring. J

Interesting article on butter and other fats. I find it remarkable how so many "experts" come up with so many different conclusions from the same studies. You read that any highly processed oils should be avoided such as corn oil, soybean oil, etc and then articles such as this claim they are healthy oils. The section on coconut oil says it is bad for you and then goes on to say it is good for your HDL. Buyer beware! Or go by your gut instincts:)

Well said kattay. I use butter, olive oil, and some canola. I've tried the coconut but to me it makes everything have a slimy oily texture that I don't like.

Interesting what happens when you put things (even those day to day not related to losing weight comments) in your journal and leave it public. People comment, expanding your outlook on everything in your life. It is enlightening and makes this journey very enriching for your life as a whole.

Wholefoodnut, do you feel butter helped with your weight loss? How long? I just started using coconut oil more this week. A couple of weeks ago I tried adding a bit to my morning black coffee. Made it taste like a dessert. I was losing so slow for some reason, so I stopped using it for awhile. I do like shrimp (20 medium) browned in 1 tsp coconut oil with garlic powder which I tried this week. Raised up my fats this week, weigh-in should be interesting.

Chris, you must have quite a stash in that freezer of yours? Are you ever going to run out of things to use up??

It's going to take a while, wholefoodnut. I was doing inventory in the freezer tonight. It's still about two-thirds full. Lots of bags of broccoli cuts (must have been a ten for a dollar each sale at Kroger), not to mention peas, carrots, and frozen fruit. Not to mention the pantry: boxes of pasta and cereal, cans of tomatoes, beans, and Wild Planet shrimp, rice, TVP, etc. The only thing I've added lately is powdered milk, salmon, and almonds. As I work my way through my stores, I will start replacing with more whole foods and fresh vegetables eventually. The priority is to eat what I've got since some of it is expiring.

Chris Del Monte makes a no salt added canned/stewed tomatoes for when you're ready to replace yours.

Just teasing you, I have a lot also. Plan to do the yearly clean out and defrost my old upright freezer this weekend, didn't get to it couple weeks ago as planned. I forget what's all in there.

msbuggirl, thanks for the tip. I couldn't find the Del Monte at Amazon, but did find organic no-salt diced tomatoes in cans from Muir Glen. They don't specify whether their cans are BPA-free. I haven't looked at Kroger yet. My experience has been that Kroger doesn't stock a lot of no-sodium added or low sodium products.

Turns out Muir Glen cans are BPA-free. As far as I know, Del Monte's aren't.
