Well it's a habit/behavior and it can be changed. Make sure you get enough protein at dinner to keep you satisfied longer. Make sure you are hydrated so you don't mistake thirst for hunger. Plan out a couple of lower calories snacks you can have that won't blow your diet. Put the scale in front of the fridge as a deterrent. There's also a book called "Becks Diet Solution" which helps us change the way we think about food and our behaviors. Check out reviews on amazon or see if local library has it. It might help. Finding other things to do in the evening with your hands might help too.
