Having too much fun making breakfast look pretty. Icelandic rye, seitan, walnuts, strawberries & blackberries. 409 cals, 12 g fiber, 25 g protein. The seitan is my secret weapon to get adequate protein. I don't use protein powders & am mostly vegan

Thanks! I enjoyed it greatly 😊 Very, very filling. I'm big into breakfast, but a lot of nights, I could take or leave dinner

FIRST DAY AGAIN -- I sometimes feel like I'm swimming against the tide here with so many going low carb and high protein. If it works for them, I'm not going to tell them they should be doing anything different. Like you, the plant-based really seems to agree with me. My general strategy is enough but not excessive protein (0.8-1.1 g per kg), at least 30 g fiber (I'm usually over 40), mostly plants, mostly whole foods. Whether I lose more weight or not, I feel like this is the healthy and sustainable path for me

Breakfast looks good! I've never heard of seitan - it looks like bread. I am TRYING to go mostly plant based and may eventually give up meat. I couldn't be vegan as I get most of my protein from dairy (fat free milk) and eggs.

Whey is vegan ad very good for you.

Whey is not vegan, CebuCowboy. It's a dairy product. I'm not 100% vegan, and I do drink whey from time to time, but it's not a vegan food. I'll concur on the good for you bit.

Hi Writingwyo. Is the (0.8-1.1 g per kg) ratio based on body weight or something else. Thanks

Frizzy -- seitan is almost pure (gasp!) gluten. I know, gluten has a bad rap, but I have no problem with it. I make my own. It is kind of bread like, especially when I toast it like this. Very, very chewy, dense, seasoned bread. Extremely high in protein and low in fat/calories. If you make it yourself, you can season it any way you want. I made an Italian sausage seasoned seitan that was really good on pizza 😋

Mn1531 -- yes, based on body weight. 0.8 is the RDA, but I've seen 1.1 recommended for people over 50 to prevent sarcopenia. I figure somewhere between those two are fine.. For me, at 140 pounds, that comes out to between 53 and 73 g protein, which usually works out in the neighborhood of 15% of my intake

Not Frizzy, Fritzy! Dang autocorrect!! In terms of going vegan and getting enough protein without dairy and eggs, for me it takes a lot of beans, whole grains, soy, and seitan. I can do it, but I have to be very mindful and intentional about it. I have seriously upped my bean consumption since I went down this path

EmmaLeanAgain -- did you mean seitan? A lot of times I just cut off a slice and toast it, or just eat it cold. It makes a nice meat substitute cut up in a stir fry. I also sometimes run it through the food processor until it's the texture of cooked ground beef, and use it as a substitute for that

YetAnotherAccount -- nothing wrong with sunflower butter on toast! Sounds like a tasty breakfast to me 😋
