If you are new to Atkins, or know someone New - please point them to this journal! Much Love.

Different opinions doesn’t have to mean one person is right and someone else is wrong. That being said, this way of eating, along with all other ways of eating – impact and perform DIFFERENTLY in every single solitary human body. We are unique, and individual, and there will most certainly be ‘differences’ in how each person’s way of eating ends up looking like.

But are there some common generalities? YES.

Whether you are a vegan, or a low carber, a calorie counter, or a primal … the starting point should be the food you are selecting – the quality of it – to put in your body in the first place.

I bet if a vegan searched long and hard enough, they could find all kinds of ‘meat substitutes’ to fill their menus with – almost the same way that low carbers do with making sweets and treats.

Part of the early process of Induction is meant to cleanse, and correct your body’s metabolic process. Changing it from a traditional carb energy source, to burning stored fat for fuel. (Let me just say here… we require 0 carbs to keep our body alive!) The human body has it’s own built in way of converting stored fat… extracting from that and creating the required glucose for the brain, etc… and burning off the excess for energy.

But we live in a culture and world where we choose what we eat – by our own tastes and preferences. We do not have empty shelves in the stores, or a lack of supply available to us. So what are we choosing to eat?

Let’s focus on Atkins here for a minute – there is such a thing as the Inductions List of Foods, approved and created by the Atkins Corp. WHY? Too much science for this journal… but because they designed the program – and when followed it works! But there is more than one version of Atkins??? Yes, that is correct. Old school Atkins allowed certain things, and now the New school Atkins has added a few more basics to the Induction list.

Used to be – back in the day – that people counted TOTAL carbs. (and for anyone who has been on Induction for 4 weeks, with little to no progress, and can HONESTLY say they have followed the Induction foods list to the letter… Total carbs might be your alternative!) For the rest of you… counting NET carbs just simply involves subtracting Fiber g’s. And then there are those dreaded sugar alcohols.

Artificial sweetners, and sugar alcohols, no matter what – are most certainly not good for you! Transition… find ways to move away from using them. So, why does Atkins use them, or create and try to sell products with them in them??? Money! So you will buy their products. It is the one thing about Atkins I do not like. But even Collette (the Nutritionist on the Atkins website) has gotten on board with letting New Members know up front that they are reported by users as creating stalls!!!

Who the heck wants to make a commitment, make all kinds of an investment in changing out their food sources and available foods to eat… purchase these stinkers… and then come away with only a tiny bit of loss for their efforts? NO ONE!

If I knew then what I know now… (that’s what you’ll be saying a couple of months down the road!)

So, Induction Foods List in hand – you set out to change your life! You’re reading labels, joining this site for tracking your foods, getting support, motivation, etc… and you start making friends, people offer their differing opinions and advice, you look at others food journals for ideas… and WHAM! You start ‘substituting’ before you know it! OH BOY, I can have sugar free syrup and low carb baking mix to make pancakes!

REALLY?

I’m sorry, I don’t see that on the Inductions Foods List anywhere! (and I am not picking on any one person at all.) Pick a food category… and there are all kinds of examples that could be swapped out for this one!

Induction is the perfect time to focus on making CHANGES. You obviously are going to be making BIG changes just by switching over to eating low carb. So do yourself and your body a favor, and just follow the plan. Start at the beginning, like everyone else – and learn everything you can about how to make Induction the best experience for your body!

In time you will move on to the next phase… and OWL has it’s own set of guidelines, and it’s own quirks. And by far, this is the area where most people go to fast, add to much at the same time, over indulge in what they think are ‘acceptable’ foods, in comes the artificial stuff by the buggy full, and stalls, stalls, stalls.

Better yet… most of you think you are in a stall when you’re NOT! Then you start tweeking, obsessing, and trying to fix something that is not broken. You just aren’t doing EVERYTHING you used to be doing. (like keeping up with your water intake.) (or overcarbing w/ hidden carbs). You jump on and off the scale twice a day as if somehow that is going to ‘justify’ your lack of drinking water. (just using water as an example here.)

Stalled or otherwise, you need to change your thinking! How you viewed food, and how you view it now…plays a huge role in your overall success. What do you really think about the new lifestyle you have chosen? Do you love it enough to be sold out, fully 100% committed to eating this way – forever? Because for the most part… that is what you will be doing!

PLEASE understand that just because you did Atkins before – doesn’t mean you already know all you need to know… if that were true, you wouldn’t be here. This journal, and all of my journals about this WOE (way of eating) – are meant to make you THINK!

If something doesn’t apply to you…it doesn’t apply. But if it hits home, if something rises up in you when you read something I write, or a part of something… then explore that for YOU! My next journal is going to be about what I did in the beginning, and how I ate, what I ate, and how I made this program work for me. I had never been on Atkins before, … so I approached this a LOT like an experiment.

I wanted to changed. I was willing to change. I searched for change. I researched change. I read, and read, and read some more… and I balanced one piece of advice on one site, with other advice on other sites. I asked more questions than any ONE person should probably ask…but I didn’t care… I was DESPERATE. Smart, Intelligent, Willing, Able, and interested in seeing the number 150 or below again in my life…way more than I ever cared if I ate a processed, artificially made and substituted to death pancake!

Much Love.

Great journal.... I am not on Atkins either - but like Bren, think this makes sense. I am on calorie counting, and it always amazes me the crap people eat. Instead of sticking to healthy fruit, veg, lean meat and fish. They have pre-packed, low calorie, packaged, processed muck - how is this educating them!!! They also have McDonalds, chocolate, cake, pastry etc - how is this educating them!!!! So frustrating - this is supposed to be a lifestyle change and that means changing your eating habits, to a healthy balanced diet..... If you stick to what you used to eat but eat smaller portions, you will put weight back on again.... I am getting off my soap box now :-)

Thanks Paula for this post. The one part that really got me was that I thought I knew how to eat Atkins but after reading the guidelines again and again, found out I missed some. It takes time to eat healthy because you do need to start with whole foods and not processed, easy to grab foods.

Your post made me wish I was on Atkins! But it is just not for me, I love fruit and vegetables too much and I am doing ok on my own diet. But it is great to see how people can get support on here, thanks for posting, I am sure you have helped someone today!

So glad you ladies got something out of it! Just remember, most people on this site are in the 'middle' somewhere in this journey. But if you need to back up a few steps to reboot the beginning a little, no harm, no foul... just do what you NEED to do... so that you can move forward and achieve your goals. They are not my goals. They are your goals! And no matter what you are doing - eating healthy foods should be a given! Just sayin'...

Don't hold back Paula, tell us how you really feel! I know how frustrated you get (you can tell from your journal!). No one is perfect and its not easy and not everyone has the willpower and stamina that you have. Not a criticism Paula, you just seem to have remarkable 'everything'. You've worked hard at this WOL and have changed a lot in the process. Some of us just take a lot longer to get the point. Convenience foods aren't going anywhere and sometimes convenience wins despite best of intentions. McDonald's might not be the healthiest but it can be an option if you don't eat the bun, or have the salad without the dressing. Not the healthiest maybe but it is quick and modern families these days need quick. Thanks for always sharing your ideas and for wanting us all to be better. Everything you say, your caring shines through. Thank you for caring so passionately.

I do get what you mean Paula, but like sarahsmum says not everyone is as strong as you are. To be perfect is what we all set out to do, but if we fall short of perfect I don't want to stop. Perfection has let me down in the past if I don't make my own grade I beat myself up then fall off the wagon. But being on FS has really helped me to realize that I am not perfect but a lot of others on here aren't either. I will get there by hook or by crook. I am actually not doing to bad at all, I love to be able to check out others diet calendars and see yes they are not following 100%. I do think I am lucky the Atkins bars do work for me. I don't have 2 or 3 a day and a ton of other carbs, but it really is trial and error. The Atkins bars work for me and help keep me on track. I know that bacon seems to be bad for me. I don't buy processed foods, don't eat lunch meats, I eat from the outside of the store, I try to buy at farmers markets and local grown produce. But I am not perfect I did have a very small piece of Birthday cake on the weekend, (that is rare for me) just glad that now I can do that and not crave more, I really did have a very small piece and that was enough. Before FS and Atkins that small piece would have put me off for a week or more, because I wasn't perfect. Sorry to ramble on here.. But do know you do this with love in your heart and plenty of passion.

Issy - You are absolutely right! No one is perfect, including me. Just speaking to the 'masses' about staying on point and letting your focus and motivation move you to learn as much as you can. And I agree with you - sometimes we are caught out and for convenience sake we have to choose somthing! I have had a 100% Angus Burger at MickeyD's several times, w/ two pieces of lettuce, bacon, (no cheese-it's processed yuck to me) and just a little mayo. Or a side salad and cut up the burger and put it on the salad as a topping. It'll due for the rare 'must have something' moments. Issy, I don't think I have remarkable -'everything'... but I sure have gained back an awful lot of my self respect and self esteem by making this work for me in my life. I see friends on here everyday, and my heart just yearns to somehow help anyone using this program - to discover the keys to making this work - for YOU. Your keys, or someone else's keys... they might be different than mine. And I am open to that. But this way of eating lends itself to a lot of mistakes that can lead to UBER frustration...which can lead to giving up. And I just don't want to see that happen to people. Thank you for thinking so highly of me, I am really just trying to help.

Yvonne - I am not asking you, or anyone to be perfect. I am not. Just to be open. The more you learn, the easier this WOE gets. The more you discover what works for your body..the easier this WOE gets. There are some real potholes to this WOE if we're not careful. I certainly didn't mean to come across like I think I'm perfect - I don't! But I do have a lot of experience, and I am just trying to help those who are looking for 'how to get this thing working' for them. I get a lot of emails and questions, and every so often I write a journal like this one to touch on a rather 'popular' topic...that's all. Much Love.

Paula- Last night while doing some channel scanning I heard someone say "if you eat with being healthy as your goal you will lose weight". I can't help but believe that.

Paula, I do think that this new style of living is a long road of learning, I know I have listened and read many books on the healthy side of life, which is what really interests me. It has changed from when I was younger, only really interested in getting slim, not caring how I did it. Like Buffy says "if you eat with being healthy as your goal you will lose weight" that has been the big change for me. I want to stay healthy not just lose weight. Keep up your great journals, which makes people think. Much love.

WARNING! CAUTION! I agree with most everything you have stated however, I think one should be careful about giving strong advice without a disclaimer. I believe food is medicine and have changed my diet to include all organic. I rarely eat dairy so my food is small amounts of protein, a bit of healthy fat and veg. No bars, shakes, jello, pancakes, alcohol etc. Lost 50 lb on Atkins counting REG carbs since I could not lose on net carbs. Have posted that I believe the new Atkins program is a money maker for books and product - heresy in the cult like Atkins forum world. Oh well, everyone needs a tribe don't they? The point of this comment is this. We should not be telling the uninformed that a body can live on zero CHO. While it is true for some, and it seemed to be working for me, this is not a one size fits all (ha!) comment that should be made without the old warning, "Check with your physician before...." I am currently dealing with serious, hopefully improving, health conditions directly related to a high protein diet. And I have a medical background. Thankfully, I knew some of the warning signs and was able to get help in time but there are those who will suffer to keep that scale dropping or wonder why they feel so poorly and go off the plan. It is difficult for me to even speak of this because it is exactly what gives "Atkins" a bad rap and I am not sure I want that to happen. There is a reason for the "new" induction 12-15 foundation veg recommendation and I think that if one wants to follow original (old) Atkins, they should also follow the great man's advice to keep trying to add carbs, drop back and try again. If you must live without fruit and vegetables for the rest of your life then so be it. But before this becomes the norm, consider the effect on the environment. Watch the film, "Eat" - A disturbing doc that might get you thinking. The object is to heal the metabolism. In our sick and polluted world, our food is sick as well, and we need the micronutrients of antioxidants and phytochemicals that do not come in chicken breast or juicy steak. Careful supplementation or whole foods are required. I wish that people who thought they were stuck or stalled would just eat cleanly and detoxify their bodies and minds before announcing the diet does not work but this is another topic entirely. Thank you for this opportunity to vent. You do much good with your journals. I am asking for caution. I am a bit cranky on this topic because I am still ill and the medication is full of side effects. I wish us all lovingkindness.
