A small pap of 161g is 541 calories, 😭such a small amount. I wish there were cheaper alternatives

I wonder if you could use polenta instead. It's low in calories and in carbs. 😅

This is what I hate about healthy eating 😭 our cultural food is so calorie dense it’s like giving up everything for weight loss

That's the calories for the raw ingredient not the cooked product. When you cook it water accounts for lots of the weight. For many meals there are variations according to the cooking process, ie boiled, fat added, fried , skin eaten, lean eaten etc. Unfortunately I don't see a calorie count for cooked pap just for maize meal.

I feel this.
Screw chips and burgers. The first thing coming back will be pap or samp.

try Polenta, it tastes just like pap and is less than R50 at Dischem!

Haibo guys, I thought we were supposed to weigh the maize meal, not the cooked pap😩?

@kagiso116 my understanding is that the app calculates based on the nutritional table on the packaging, which is based on uncooked

Like pasta you weigh the uncooked product as you're cooking it with water and water has no calories

Yes weigh raw then divide cooked into portions /original weight. That's how I understand it.

Tjo… kamo cooking pap is about feeling the vibes. How do you measure that accurately 💀

@masenya1738 you weigh out the maize meal, eg. 60g or 120g and use only what you've weighed out to cook

Hi guys, thanks for the engagement. I wanted to reply individually but the app doesn't allow me to. I did some calculations, I cooked pap for the whole fam.I used 720g dry maize meal, I used about 1.5 liters of water. It turns out that 200 grams of cooked pap equals 79.4 g of dry maize meal. So the pap that I measured is 253 calories instead of 541 calories. Not bad, I'll still have pap some few times a week.
