the only bad news we had was my thyroid stimulating hormone is at 5.5, which is high end of normal, but too high for pregnancy. 🤌🏽 Im not American- my mom is from Naples, italy. Dad from Crete Greece. i was raised in america. i grew up eating VERY Mediterranean. once my mom left us, that when we started eating like Americans....deep fried anything, desserts, and pizza, burgers and anything processed. we got back on track eventually and followed Atkins mostly. My mom did the cooking mostly, my dad stayed outta her way. 😂....alas, here i am, with an Italian American partner; now for 5 years, unable to lose weight, eating like an Americano...now with the thyroid issue! 🤌🏽 i refuse to take the medication when i can eat my way to health. Its subclinical hypothyroidism- not Overt. i refuse to take the medication.... food and shitty sleep got me in the mess, food and sleep will get me out.... 🤌🏽 im so pissed off 😠 🤌🏽 as you can tell...

Dazey, I understand how frustrated you feel with this diagnosis and if I had thyroidism, I probably would have followed the route that you have decided to correct the root cause by eating healthy and sleep at proper times. However I think you mentioned that you are pregnant. If you don't take medications while being pregnant it might harm the baby. It would be nice that you get good proper sleep, eat healthy while taking medications till the delivery to protect your unborn baby and yourself from any complications. This is just a suggestion, the best decision would be to consult your gynac. Wish you a safe pregnancy and an easy delivery and that the thyroid levels get to normal soon.

Hi Dazey, I am also right on the edge of “normal” with my TSH at 0.76 and the bottom range of “normal” at 0.74. Once I got on medication I was surprised at how much better I felt in terms of brain fog, energy, focus, and weight management….but, I started having chest pain and rapid heart rate from medication so I am on a temporary stop until we figure out what medication I can tolerate. All that to say, medication made a huge positive difference for me! I hope that your diet changes work well for you, my hope in all things is to use whole food and lifestyle changes to manage everything. Crossing my fingers for you!

I hope you can change things around quickly.

Thanks everyone for the words. I moy take the medication just for the duration of pregnancy, while committing to Mediterranean and continuing exercise. Too many studies see that elevated TSH leads to miscarriage, iugr, placenta abruption, and learning impairments. I hope everything will be ok.

I' didn't think thyroid issues had anything to do with thyroid issues, except maybe not getting enough iodine. I had hyperthyroidism and what I ate or didn't eat had no impact on the condition.

Only you know what's best. I hope it gives you comfort that I was hyperthyroid and didn't know. That was why I miscarried. With carefully managing Graves Disease hyperthyroidism I successfully had baby 1. Struggled to get preggo with #2 and had thyroidectomy. Decided against radiation because of our goal of near term pregnancy. After being stabilized in 90 days I was pregnant within 90 days with baby #2. Obviously I had to take Synthroid since my thyroid was removed but little guy is 2, normal no problems. I took Synthroid while I exclusively breast fed him for over a year. It's a hard choice. You'll make the right one. Just know medicine is not failure if it can facilitate you towards a goal. God speed!

I have considered the Mediterranean and the food looks healthy and delicious. - I take generic Synthroid at 75 years old cause i really do need it. I get my blood levels checked regularly. - The final decision is between you and your Doc.

I meant to say I didn't think thyroid issues had anything to do with DIET!

Dazey, I had the radioactive iodine treatment in my early twenties and have had to take levothyroxine (the generic name for Synthroid) ever since. Had two healthy unproblematic pregnancies in my thirties. Definitely make sure your thyroid levels are optimal during pregnancy. The medication is known for its safety—you just don’t want to get too much or too little.

Fritzy, yes, i never struggled with my thyroid, and the biggest change has been my diet, and my weight, and less exercise then i used to get. After my second child was born, he was 11 months when they said i had subclinical hypothyroidism. I changed my WOE to keto, and within 6 month my TSH was normal. It stayed normal until now, and its been retested multiple times over the years, and i didn't stick with keto but various versions of low carb. Studies show exercise has a great impact on lowering TSH! I know i need to eat like my roots and get moving more despite the fatigue.

I did pick up the prescription, and plan to start it tonight, and still work on clearing out our kitchen of junk(we dont have alot really) and change the flours we use for baking breads and pasta.

Sugarplum- its one of the healthiest ways of eating! It doesnt really need to be too extravagant or complicated. Pick a favorite recipe and see how it can modified to mirror a Mediterranean recipe! Homemade pasta is super easy to make, but does take a moderate of time! Its mostly focusing eliminating all the processed/preservative filled foods and finding fresh alternatives.
