I have been approaching meal based events with the mindset that I'm there to visit with the people, not to eat. It helps me reframe my thinking about food. I either eat beforehand or, do as you're saying and bring something I can eat. What about a pizza salad? Whatever toppings you like on a pizza but in salad form. I bring a portion of food that I've measured out for me of the same food I'm bringing to the event. People haven't noticed that I'm not eating when I don't, either. I tend to bounce around and have conversations with people who are waiting to get food, are almost done eating, and are done eating since it's rare for me to see everyone eating at the same time in casual situations.
