Ugh. Morning after a fast and I gain 0.2. I'm sure it has something to do with me starting my menstrual cycle this morning, but still wish I's lost. Oh well. I am also under the firm belief that when you plateau there is more going on in the body. Internal changes will happen before it shows on the scale. I'm not worried.
I am planning a 72 hr fast this weekend. I need advice. Do I drink only water for 72 hours? Do I eat 500 kcal/day? Or less? Is it okay to fast while menstruating? Any advice is welcome! :)

There is no one magic formula that one must follow. Experiment and find what works for you. I do a full fast; no food, but I have not gone over 50 or so. 72 is hardcore!

When you fast do you include coffee? Broth? Or is it just water?

As JP said, there is no magic formula. Part of the success is finding out that you can go 3 or more days on water only...and live! Very empowering! I will fast once a month for 3 days (closer to 87-88 hours total) with just water. Sometimes I have some herbal tea if I get cold. Interesting physical effect is that my inflammation almost disappears... I used to do this when I was menstruating also, no bad consequences, just harder. More emotions going on. I like feeling strong going into the fast.

Thanks Becca. I think I'm going to do a water fast for three days. I've read it is really good for your immune system and helps the body heal and rebuild. Good stuff. I just hope I can keep enough water around to keep me hydrated, Not sure if 4L is going to do it.

That's the way to do it. 0 Cals. If you eat anything its not a fast. Even juice breaks a fast. Juice fasting is BS. Coffee and tea are fine though. With no cream or sugar. But you can use Stevia. And I am proof, 3 days is easily doable if you have good self control. its day 2 that is the difficult part. KP, what is your longest fast so far. If you have not done a full 48, I would recommend doing that first. Save the 72 for later.

You may be misunderstanding what water fasting is. You don't drink water all day long. You just drink when your thirsty. I drink like 3 liters of water a day. Sometimes 4. But that's it.

One more thing, I usually break a fast slowly. If you go directly into your eating plan, if you've fasted more than 24 hours, your body might not feel very good. Your broth, coconut water, things that go easy on your digestion will help it go smoothly. You will also have a weight loss and probably a bob back up a bit...don't let that disappoint you. It's very normal and your body will thank you for the break :) Good luck, keep us posted!
