It's been a tough week, and this one looks just as rough in different ways. I made it to the gym yesterday for the first time in a week, and then found my padlock was missing. Ugh. Anyway, managed to put in 44 minutes of exercise. That was good.

So, what kept me from the gym? The big thing was putting together my third-year review/promotion portfolio at work. Although I've been here full-time for ten years, I've only been on the tenure track since 2009. As a result, I come up for review this year. I asked if I could shorten the process and just apply for tenure. The Dean said no. I appealed over her head to the Provost, pointing out that I've been in rank for ten years, and that I am the chair of a a department to boot. So he said I could apply for promotion. As a result, my portfolio contains both a sheet saying "third year review" and another stating that this is a review for promotion in rank. I have not been as nervous since I took my comprehensive exams in 1991.

The portfolio contains more teaching evaluations than I needed. I just threw in ten year's worth. I also threw in samples of published work rather than copies of all my publications; I'd have needed a second volume if I did that, and I wasn't about to provide the Promotion and Tenure Committee with that much paper. I did put in a couple of surprises -- I don't think that they'll be expecting to see my name turn up in the acknowledgments of a fantasy novel (Cold Fire by Kate Elliott) nor in the acknowledgments of a book on how science is coming under attack (Denying Science by John Grant) -- as well as all the stuff that I am expected to do.

Hope you get your promotion..after all you have been there quite awhile...congrats on the 44 minutes of exercise...when your as busy as you I am sure its hard to get that in...Good luck in your ventures..

Sounds as if you have no need to worry about the promotion. But i understand why you worry. Once you get everything put together - you can get back on track with the exericise and your normal routine. Regardless of the WOE we have, it is all a lifestyle change. To me, that means that there will be times when we are not as faithful to the lifestyle as others. Life comes between us and Lifestyle sometimes. Just get back to your normal routines as soon as you can and you will be fine. Good luck with the tenure.... it sounds as if it is well deserved. What is your specialty?

LOL. I worked on a PhD for a while... Got all the way through defending the proposal and decided it was not for me. I was in the Management program and focused more in the IO psychology, human resource, Org behavior fields. In your field, you get a new set of things to study at least every 4 years :)
