Things are looking up! I've been sick the entire winter with one long respiratory illness (quite unusual for me), culminating in whooping cough. The cough lingers a long time, but yesterday I was able to walk outside for a bit without bringing it on and I actually had the energy to do this. The coughing lasts 6-10 weeks with this disease and it's been 5 weeks since it started. Feeling better and losing weight is very encouraging!

So sorry to hear about the difficult winter. I had whooping cough in 2001 and it went on for 14 weeks. I only coughed at night, so I kept going to work. It was so exhausting. I caught it from an student in my class whose parents had refused to immunize him.

Oh my, Erika! That's a long time to be coughing, though I've heard that in China the disease is referred to as the "100 day cough" which is indeed 14 weeks. I too have noticed the coughing is worse at night and woke up last night in the middle of the night experiencing something akin to an asthma attack with the cough. I had had a pertussis booster about 7 years ago but it doesn't confer 100% immunity and given I was sick for so long before I got it my immune system must have been depleted. Evidently having the disease doesn't confer as much protection as the shot and there is a rarer strain of the disease that isn't covered by the immunization. Anyone reading this who hasn't updated their immunization I encourage you to do it! Even if you do get the disease it will be a lighter case than you might otherwise have.

That's awful, devohna! I hope you are feeling better now. I did take antibiotics when the whooping cough was first starting as it seemed like I was developing bronchitis...at least that was the doctor's best guess. Thank you all for your kind thoughts and support!

Glad to hear you're on the mend and back on track! I'm getting over an upper respiratory ick, myself. It's remarkable how much mucus a body can create!
