Before you speak, THINK

Is it necessary?
Is it true?
Is it kind?
Will it hurt anyone?
Will it improve on the silence?

The practice of silence is a dicipline that teaches peace and kindness. Imagine the world if all words were thoughtful. TOWANDA!!!

Lis, my FIL used to say that your teeth are like a picket fence, keep them shut and nothing untoward gets out!

Love it. I have a scripture posted on my computer here at work... "Know this my beloved brothers: Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; For the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God." (James 1:19-20). A good reminder you posted to remind me to read my quote more often! haha!

Love that scripture, APompa. We just finished a verse by verse study of James at church, 3 weeks ago.

"Will it improve on the silence?" ~Love that. There is another good quote, attributed to many but evidently originally from the Bible: "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." Even though I've not expertly followed that advice so far, I've always liked that one.

How true that is. Wouldn't it be great if we could always think before we speak. Another awesome reminder.

What I've gone by is the two out of three rule. "Is it kind?" "Is it helpful?" "Is it true?" At least Two out of three of those questions have to have the answer "yes" before the comment is said. I have to say though that the "is it true?" one virtually always has to be one of the 'yes' ones for me to say what is on my mind.

I have 'The 4 Agreements' under my clear desk blotter to remind me every day of what's important. 1. Be Impeccable with Your Word 2. Don't Take Anything Personally 3. Don't Make Assumptions 4. Always Do Your Best These 4 ideals embody what is true for self (along with the Scriptures quoted in your message stream). Thanks for sharing!

I have enjoyed reading this entry and every comment on it. Great reminder to think before you speak. Its amazing how many quotes used are scriptually based. Love it!
