Journal de 59Carol, 09 oct. 21

This feels quite crazy this morning. I have dropped a full pound this morning however I have spent this entire week with gains of up to 2 pounds. I have not logged a loss all week and then suddenly this morning I have lost a pound. I will take it but it is suspicious!

Today we celebrate Thanksgiving supper. I am cooking a turkey in my old fashioned wood cook stove. I practiced getting the vents right earlier this week so I know I can get it up to temperature! I am making an old fashioned meal - turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, mashed yam, roasted carrots and parsnips, cranberry sauce and homemade buns. I have made apple and pumpking pies. I am hosting the family for the first Thanksgiving in two years. We are making an effort to be Covid compliant but have just chosen to bite the bullet and gather the family.

Stucco is moving at a snail's pace. Family disasters have been hitting my contractor one after the other. Yesterday her father died. Nothing either she or I can do about it. Life happens.

Construction is the handbook on life happens. If its not things hidden behind walls or supply chain delivery problem then the people doing the work are hit with vehicle problems, injuries or what not. We also do the Canadian timing of Thanksgiving, but still skipping it this year. So please celebrate for us too. Have a great 🦃 day. Blessing to all your family

Thank you to all of you! We had a lovely Thanksgiving. Very low key but with lots of laughter. Not having celebrations for so long we were truly thankful for our traditions that have been on hiatus. I literally laughed until I cried a couple of times. It felt so good. The woodstove stayed up to temperature. I was so concerned about the turkey not being cooked that it may have been a bit on the side of overdone but not much! No complaints. Laughed at the heat in the house because my 4 dozen bun recipe rose and rose and we ended up with 64 buns!

SparkKG you have obviously done the construction thing. You described my experiences to a T. I have been renovating three houses over the last 2.5 years. Two rental properties (both around 100 years old so lots of surprises) and my own home (only 60 years old). My home is nearly done and both rental properties were finished as of March 2020 until last July when one of them had a water break and totally destroyed the lower floor suite. Urrgh. They hope to start working on it next week. Fingers crossed. Thank goodness for insurance. Meanwhile my home renovations are stalled.

59Carol, it has been the long string of dying relatives (6) with me doing last two years of life care (bathroom grab bars, wheelchair ramps etc) and then after them passing doing clean out and revamp to sell. Most of these properties did not end up in my hands as death brings out greed. I don’t like to bicker and only stay long enough to make sure their wishes are honored. But have seen roofs damaged during storms that I decided to jump for a new roof the under structure was just old paneling and the contractor showed up late each day drunk (but end job was excellent). Putting in shower grab bars that wouldn’t hold so pulled of tile to show a black mold soft wood hell and had to replace new floor joists, cement board, pull out old tub etc. Putting in new flooring to make it easier to clean up pee accidents and finding none to the subflooring was level and half way through that job the supplier of flooring went out of business so had to scramble for a new flooring. That c… ok I’ll stop but I feel your pain.

Oh my goodness SparkKG! That is horrid. I have had the string of dying relatives (mother, father, brother and grandmother) experience while in my 20s which meant that most of the relatives died young and did not need end of life care from me. Presently I am responsible for my 90 year old father in law. Thank goodness he is in good health and is able to live independently in his own home and continues to maintain his driving license so he can get around just fine. My buildings were not in the kind of shape you describe thank goodness! Just old electrical and plumbing that needed to be upgraded with quirks and wonkiness that were unexpected. One space had to be converted from a series of roooms (place was an old rooming house) into an independent unit. Our families are small- only one or two kids or no children so the will stuff was all pretty straightforward. I am grateful that I have never had to face will ugliness. That would be hurtful.

Most of that is behind me now. Just two most homes to clean up. One I have a renter lined up as soon as it is ready and they are willing to put in some work for lower rent and the other we moved into and currently working on. I think in the end it will all be worth it. Two more relatives living that are of good health and mind. So it’s just me that needs to finish construction on my body. Time for us to dig in and get to the maintanance zone. Here we go 😉☺️

SparkKG Glad that you have healthy family left. Very important to do the work on yourself now. All that effort and care you put into caring for others needs to be focused on yourself now! The healthier you are the better you can care for yourself long into the future.

Happy Thanksgiving! Turkey wasn't traditional in our Cajun household, more likely a roasting chicken and a pork roast. I did do Turkey when my children were growing up, traditions are lovely! 🍁🍁🍁

Shirfleur we were the turkey variety however I really liked the Easter ham! We don't always get together at Easter so ham doesn't happen as often as I would like. I love pork roast... my favourite with apple sauce.
