Used to do the same thing, but changed my mind and started looking at total calories per day. I also aim to keep my total calories between 1400 and 1800 per day. With my exercise calories, I can lose between 1/2 and 1 pound per week depending on what happens on the weekend. Weekends are tough for me since we tend to eat at a restaurant or have an outing to go to. That's when the calories inflate and then have a temporary weight gain. Keep at it, you will get there.
